Play: In Times of War

News from Vaish:

In Times of War
After 5 succesful shows at Nani Arena and Opus, Harlequin’s latest Production “In Times of War” will now feature at Ranga Shankara on the 20th, 21st and 22nd May, 2005.
The evening comprises of two 35 minute plays based on Wartime scenes.
Both plays are original scripts and premier productions.

The first play, called ‘Ek Kadam ka Faasla’, is a Hindi play written by Kunal Sharma (Mumbai) and set in an imaginary war between India and Pakistan. An intense, topical play that has a twinge of strangely dry humour, it tells the story of two warring soldiers who find themselves caught for the night in a trench in no man’s land. Each soldier serves to portray the ideals and perceptions of his own country andarmy…resulting in a lot of cursing, fist-fighting and some penetrating insights into the psyche of the soldier and his love for his country.

The second play, called ‘The Army doesn’t Need You’, is written by Bangalore based Ajay Krishnan and plays as companion and counter to the earlier play. Set in any war between any two countries and at any time, it is a satirical, blackly humorous take on all things war-like. It fearlessly takes apart the ideals of courage, patriotism and leadership and teamwork and forces one to look at things with a jarringly, all-too-real perspective.

The plays, under the collective title of ‘In Times of War’, have been directed by Vivek Madan and featureMunish Sharma and Raza Hussain.

Tickets at rs. 100/- will be available at Crosswords, Opus, Supermarket (Brig Rd) and at the venue.

Film: Dwitiya Paksha

Network of Women in Media, Bangalore
And
Pedestrian Pictures

invite you to the screening of

Dwitiya Paksha

2003/96 mins/colour/feature
The screening will be followed by an audience with
Ananya Chatterjee Chakraborti.

Date: 14 May 2005, Saturday
Time: 5 pm
Venue: SCM House, Mission Road, Bangalore. See http://www.collectivechaos.org/ for map.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

About the film:
Set in the backdrop of the 73rd Amendment, Dwitiya Paksha is the story of a woman who is elected to the post of a panchayat president from a seat reserved for women under the amendment. Shyama replaces her father-in-law, the man of power and long serving panchayat president now displaced by the reservation. The film is a narration of the process of Shyama’s empowerment – from a consideration of her as an illiterate, innocent safe proxy candidate to one who arrives at decisions independently.
The film lends itself to a critical thinking of the changes, if any, affected by constitutional amendments such as the 73rd Amendment on the social and political fabric of our society.

Screenings: Dhaka International Film Festival (2004),
The Nehru Center (London), Social Communication Cinema
Festival, Kolkata.

About the director:
Ananya Chatterjee Chakraborti is a filmmaker, television journalist, writer and activist based in
Kolkatta who has worked extensively in the area gender and human rights. She is a member of Vikalp (an association of film-makers who are opposed to any form of censorship), IAWRT (International Association for Women in Radio and Television, Norway), NWMI (Network
for Women in Media, India), Bengal Network and PIPFD (Pakistan Indian People's Forum for Peace and Democracy).

The Kodachadri hills tower over the tiny pilgrim centre of Kollur. But there is still no mistaking Kodachadri (1,343m), the highest hill from which the range gets its name. It seems to rise high up into the clouds, greyish blue, with wreaths of green decorating it from the bottom to the top. It borders Kundapur in Udupi district. On its western portion, it drops almost perpendicular to the Mookambika Wildlife sanctuary, which is the home of the endangered lion-tailed macaque.

DZONGRI- GOECHALA (MT.Kanchenjunga) Sikkim.

This is undoubtedly the most popular trek in Sikkim, famed for its superb mountain views, a floral spectacle in summer, birds and views of pristine forest. It can get quite crowded on this route during oct. The trail initially meanders through dense forest and, in summer, flowering orchids can be seen clinging to the bark of the highest trees.
There is a lot of bird life as well in this part of the route- Wagtails, redstart, minivets, whistling thrushes, blue magpies, tree pies and more can be spotted along the way. The weather is mild and the grass green and fresh. The mountains are at their tantalising best- a sharp shower and the clouds lift for a few minutes to reveal the steep south face of Pandim.
Dates: 21 May 05 - 11 OCt 05.
Duration : 11 days- From NJP to NJP
Tariff: Rs 14,999/- Groups above 5-5%; 10- 10%; 15- 15%.

DALHOUSIE- KALATOP- KHAJJIAR- CHAMBA- DHARAMSHALA

Lt Col Mapier of Magdala first conceived of Dalhousie as a sanitarium in 1851. Since sanitarium was founded during the tenure of Lord Dalhousie as Governor General of India, it bears his name. " one of the finest hill stations in India is Dalhousie from the point of beauty, climate and agreeable surroundings." It is known for the long level walks around its five hills. Among these , the circular walk on the Thandi Sarak and Garam Sarak is the most popular.
Khajjiar is a picturesque green alp set in the midst of handsome deodar trees. Its fame is justly earned but it is also true that the crowds can detract from its serene charm at the height of the tourist season.

Dates: 11th June 2005.
Terrain: Moderate.
Tariff: Rs 6,999/-
Duration: 7days.

LADAKH

The vast land, dry and desiccated, swells and billows into great tiers of snow-crested peaks. Arching over it is a sky, pure blue, benign, sheltering. The indus bisects the floor of the Valley. In summer, it is a sulten grey, silt-laden, sometimes turning to violet. In autumn, it is at its most graceful: turquoise and aquamarine waters weaving through golden banks of tall poplars and tumbling willows. Crumbling old monastries command the barren, empty vistas. Dominating LEh from its vantage on the northern crag is the Leh Palace, a dminutive potala. In the late afternoon, the wind picks up, riffling the prayer flags, carrying snatches of the deeply- intoned homage to Manjushri.

BATCH 1- "Lamayuru to Alchi" - 6 days
BATCH 2 - "PADUM TO DARCHA"- 11 days.
