This festival marks the occasion of Suvarna Karnataka -50 years of Karnataka and is being organized by Karnataka Nataka Academy, Govt. of Karnataka and showcases some of the well-known theater groups of Bangalore presenting timeless Kannada classics in English. Every few days, the auditorium of Alliance Franciase de Bangalore comes alive to the sounds of crabs, coromorants, wolves and thieves. Actors from Bangalore are rehearsing for FabulaTantra, the product of an artistic collaboration between the Alliance Francaise and Artistes' Repertory Theatre - one of Bangalore's best-known theatre groups.

This present-day Indo-French collaboration will celebrate a more inadvertant collaboration from antiquity. The fables of Jean de la Fontaine are to France what the Panchatantra is to India. La Fontaine took inspiration from a myriad of sources for his fables, and one of them was Visnu Sharma's fabled teachings: the stories known as the Panchatantra.

FabulaTantra will celebrate both the exuberant simplicity and cunning slant of the fable in an energetic presentation of dance, music and theatre. It will focus on the French fables that have Indian origins and let us see two sides of a very similar world. It is strange to remember how far apart these worlds were, both geographically and temporally, when one sees how well these stories and their contexts mingle on stage

Aseema Yatre- A Dance initiative

This is to inform you that the Natya Institute of Kathak & Choreography(www.natyamaya.in) is launching a new project to propagate an awareness of Dance & Choreography in rural areas of Karnataka and satellite towns around Bangalore called- 'Aseema Yatre'

The Natya Institute as well as its contemporary dance unit- the STEM Dance Kampni (www.stemdancekampni.in) have been involved in Art in education and Dance education projects in various academic, cultural and community centres for several years now.

This new initiative is funded in part by the Department of Kannada & Culture, Govt of Karnataka.

The inaugural project will be held in Suratkal and Mangalore on the 30th of March 2006.

Filmmakers from different cinematic traditions have portrayed and interpreted insanity in many different ways, sometimes helping to further our understanding of mental distress, and at other times reinforcing our prejudices and sacrificing integrity for the sake of offering entertainment.

Frame of Mind

is a rare opportunity to view the most sensitive films made in the world that have attempted to erase the stigma surrounding mental health issues. It will showcase the best feature and short films from all over the world in a non-competitive section.

In the

competitive section we seek to counter negative, inaccurate and cliched images of people with mental illness. We encourage you to create clean, accurate, realistic and optimistic short films portraying those living with mental illness.

Here is your chance at making a short film that best reflects the struggle to erase the STIGMA surrounding issues related to mental illness (and not mental retardation).
Alternatively the films can also portray the HOPE for those with mental illness and/or their caregivers.

The film festival is a part of the

International Conference on Schizophrenia (IConS) scheduled from October 13-15, 2006 in Chennai (Madras) India. It is organized by Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF), India’s premier Non Government Organization, committed to the cause of schizophrenia. SCARF is collaborating with the World Psychiatric Association on the global anti-stigma campaign and is also a Collaborating Centre for the World Health Organization.

Hybrid Forms (a term describing mixtures and combinations) adds on to this predominant idea of documentary film by an increasingly closer interconnection of film, television, new media and the development of video and digitalisation. In the '80s and '90s, particularly, the younger generation of filmmakers tried out a large number of hybrid film techniques and forms that deliberately ignored the traditional rules and boundaries between genres. The films presented in this series reflect such new trends in the documentary genre.

There will be an interactive discussion between the two screenings on March 12^th, moderated by film experts from Srishti School.

We are attaching the screening schedule and film synopses and would be grateful if you could publish a curtain raiser on this event and depute your film critic to view and review the films.

Kumbham

As modernity and liberalization ruthlessly sweeps into dusty corners the lives of hundred and thousands of artisans, stray instances of 'recovery' are beginning to stand out as milestones. Kumbham presents the story of an artisan village recapturing the craft they had
all but lost, and redefining it to the contemporary world.

What began as a quest for identity or authenticity or even redemption of the self, led to the crystallization of 'Kumbham': an initiative with a two-fold concern. On the one hand, the search for the lost cultural roots of people like myself, who have been systematically stripped off our innate sensibilities through a process of formal education while on the other hand, simultaneously engaging a community of potters in a continuing experiment to give the traditional pottery to the new and varied needs of an urban market, grown from within their traditional repositories of
knowledge.

Located in Aruvacode, a tiny hamlet near Nilambur in Malapuram District of Kerala, India, Kumbham has attracted some 80 odd potters to affiliate with it to varying degrees, since its beginnings in 1993. In a long and arduous voyage of discovery commencing then, the community as a whole has witnessed a dramatic turn-around: from being on the verge of dissolution as
an impoverished artisan community to a resurgent group of potters whose craft was once again wanted.The kumbham iniative is being hailed as a rare instance of a traditional artisan community rehabilitating itself through the very craft they had been alienated from.

Today, Kumbham can rightfully claim to have facilitated a product range of over 500 designs, including kitchen and household ware; garden furniture and landscaping products and murals and architectural accessories.

More significant but also less visible to the outside world, is Kumbham's contribution to the rehabilitation of an entire community of traditional crafts persons. Their growing confidence in their ability to design and produce saleable terra-cotta ware without recourse to
'development consultants' or 'improved technologies' is a measure of their heightened self-worth and in all probability a change that will outlast Kumbham itself.

There are unresolved problems however, especially those originating from the dichotomy prevailing between the cultures of the producers and consumers of Kumbham-ware. Indeed the long-term prospects of the Kumbham project will depend to a large extent on the degree to which consumer cultures are replaced by more humane ones that are keenly aware of the inter-dependent nature of the survival and evolutionary needs of the species.

Music is a universal language, integral to all societies, and this workshop will give enthusiasts hands-on experience into the world of music. The participants will attend the workshop over a period of 10 days followed by a 2-week rehearsal break culminating in a public performance.

Amit Heri studied Performance, Composition & Film Scoring on a scholarship at the world-renowned Berklee College of Music, Boston USA and the University of Massachussetts at Lowell. He has performed with Zakir Hussain, Trilok Gurtu, Charlie Mariano & Angelique Kidjo (to name a few) at many international music festivals including The Berlin Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, Paris Jazz Festival and the WOMAD Festival. He has scored music for dance and theatre productions, television, radio & feature films “Morning Raga” and “Mango Souffle”.

•     Applicants must audition for the workshop by singing or playing an instrument
•     Participants will be categorised into one of three levels – beginner, intermediate & advanced, based on written tests and level of performance
•     Material will be based on the system of music education as taught by the Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA.

Course Structures

Basic Level 1
This level has been divided into 12 sessions to ensure the coverage of the basic level only. The basic level will give the students a strong base and would encourage them to understand body movements in relation to rhythm and music. The first lesson in this level will be an orientation of sorts, allowing the students to get a brief over view of the style and qualities comprising the dance forms.
Month One [February 2006]
Dance form: Meringue and Salsa
Duration: 12 sessions, comprising of a total number of 12 hours.
About the dance form: Meringue is a fun and simple dance with origins in the Dominican Republic. The music is happy and filled with puns and jokes in Spanish. The hip movements of this dance form are very similar to that of Salsa and therefore, an introduction to this dance form becomes vital to initiate body movements parallel to Salsa.
About the dance form: Red-hot Salsa! The most sensuous of all, the Salsa is a Latin American form of dance. The music is alive and loud, the steps are quick and always in tune to the count. Salsa works on the basis of Mambo a pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music. The beats of this dance have a secret within, there are two beats which are silent! So the counts are 123 and 567, the 4 and 8 are beats used to keep the count in mind and in body.
Basic Level 2
Month Two [March 2006]
Dance form: Jive
Duration: 12 sessions, comprising of a total number of 12 hours.
About the dance form: Jive is very popular in New York and has an addicting rhythm to it, which keeps you tapping your feet. This dance form is reputed to create a vibrant mood and was very popular in the 60s. The music therefore, is also of the 60s; some of the most recognized artists are Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, The Beetles, Shakin Stevens and many many more! There are many variations of this dance form, which have been created over the years, the most popular one being the rock n roll version of Prithvis and Rees!!!
Month Three [April 2006]
Dance form: Cha Cha Cha
Duration: 12 sessions, comprising of a total number of 12 hours.
About the dance form: An offshoot of the Mambo, Cha Cha Cha was a rage in the 60s and is one of the more popular forms in America. It has an infectious rhythm and with a little bit of the left leg and a little of the right moving in 3 beats you will find yourself chanting the cha cha cha in your day to day life! This dance form has a triple beat it is this triplet, which gives the cha cha cha much of its special sound. This little group of three steps is called a chasse. There are two main chasses, one starting with the left and one with the right foot.
Please note: Each session, would comprise of one hour, and the number of sessions per month would be 12.

TRI CONTINENTAL FILM FESTIVAL 2006: HUMAN RIGHTS IN FRAMES

Moving images speak to us as nothing else does. Films can enthrall and educate: the TRI Continental Film Festival demonstrates this. Successfully bringing to India the finest human rights cinema from the global south, for a second time, the festival has been organized by Breakthrough, a human rights organization that uses media, education and popular culture to promote values of dignity, equality and justice.

National Award winning actress Tara will open the festival in Bangalore on January 29, where it will travel from Delhi and Mumbai. The 15-day long festival will then tour Chennai and Kolkata in the days following.

The 16 documentaries selected this year have won accolades all over the world. A jury of five : Amar Kanwar, Arjun Chandramohan Bali, Ira Bhaskar, Rituparno Ghosh and Shohini Ghosh will award one of these with the Jury Prize. Additionally, the non-competitive section showcases 4 outstanding features.

Filmmakers will be present to discuss their films following certain screenings.

Initiated in Latin America in 2002, South Africa in 2003 and India in 2004, the TRI Continental Film Festival (3CFF) has become an annual platform for narrative, documentary, feature and short length films in the 3 continents. In the last year, the first 3CFF in India has travelled to Bangalore, Chandigarh, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune, reaching students and practitioners of human rights and film, IITs as well as cultural institutions, focused groups as well as general audiences. These films spark discussions, debates and conversations everywhere around human rights and social justice issues.

The Concrete Revolution Dir. Xialou Guo (China & UK/ 2004/ 61 min)

A meditation on the price which is being paid for the building of the new China, the film starts with the unemployed peasants rushing into Beijing to work on the demolition and the construction of the city. New China uses these people's desperation to realize its huge ambitions. But the construction workers don't belong in Beijing, and Beijing has no place for them either. They long to return to their hometowns. The director is implicated too - does she also need to return home? As China sends rockets into space and prepares to host the 2008 Olympics, this film essay shows a crucial turning point in China's history and captures a rapidly disappearing past and erosion of every individual's roots. Traje: Women and Weaving in Guatemala Dir. Phoebe Hart (Guatemala/ 2004/ 10 min)

The Maya people of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, in particular the women, wear their traditional indigenous dress with pride. Handmade with a simple backstrap loom and embroidered with designs, symbols and stories that date back to antiquity, traje poses a colourful challenge to the pressures of changing values, global economies, and discrimination threatening the Mayan weaving practice. The film tells the story of three women who are resisting the homogenising effects of "western" culture.

The House on Gulmohar Avenue Dir. Samina Mishra (India/ 2005/ 30 min)

Sometimes the story of a life is the story of a search to be at home. "The House on Gulmohar Avenue" traces the personal journey of the filmmaker through the ideas of identity and belonging. The film is set in a part of New Delhi called Okhla, where four generations of the filmmaker's family have lived. An area that is predominantly inhabited by Muslims. An area that is sometimes also called Mini Pakistan. The filmmaker's personal history is a hybrid one but she grew up as a Muslim. Set against a quiet presence of the political context in India, the film seeks an honest and deeply personal understanding of what this means - when she is aware of being Muslim, when does it matter to her and when is it easier to forget it. In the journey to answer these difficult questions, the film seeks out encounters with other residents of Okhla to arrive at a complex understanding of what it can mean to be a Muslim in India today.

Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan Dir. Petr Lom (Kyrgyzstan, Canada & Czech Republic/ 2004/ 52 min)

Bride kidnapping is a common way of marrying in Kyrgyzstan, a former Soviet repubilc in Central Asia. This ancient custom has become more widespread since Kyrgyzstan's independence: because of increasing poverty, many choose to kidnap because they cannot afford the typically steep bride price asked by a Kyrgyz girl's family. Typically, the groom takes several friends, hires a car, stakes out his bride-to-be's movements, and snatches her off the street. The woman is taken to the groom's family home. A delegation is then sent to her family to inform them of the kidnapping. The abducted woman is kept until someone from her family arrives to determine whether she will marry her abductor. The level of consent and the familiarity of the bride with the groom vary. Sometimes the kidnappings are consensual - the bride is engaged to the groom and agrees to her "abduction", a playful ritual, prior to marriage. But in many other cases, the bride has never met the groom before her abduction, and does not want to marry. Recent studies estimate that about half of all rural marriages in Kyrgyzstan today are conducted through kidnapping, and that in half of these marriages the bride is forced to marry against her will. This documentary - the first to ever document the custom - follows the dramatic stories of four of non-consensual kidnappings.

Sancharram (The Journey) Dir. Ligy Pullapally (India/ 2004/ 107 min)

Set in the lush, rural Kerala, The Journey begins with the childhood friendship between beautiful, outgoing Delilah, a Christian girl, and the sober, idealistic, and inwardly focused Kiran, whose Nair family settles next door. They quickly become inseparable, and in time Kiran feels attracted to Delilah, but suppresses it. She finds a Bergerac-like outlet by writing love letters to Delilah for Rajan, a local boy pursuing her. When Delilah learns the truth about the letters, she responds ? to Kiran. As neighbors begin to talk, Delilah's family flies into panic mode with arranged marriage plans; meanwhile Kiran fights back, leaving Delilah in the middle of a tug of war. The director achieves in this film a piquancy that deepens a sensitively drawn story. Angola saudades from the one who loves you Dir. Richard Pakleppa (Angola/ 2005/ 65 min)

The civil war in Angola tore the country in two for twenty-seven years. Three years ago peace was negotiated. For the first time since the country's independence it is united, but it has also been totally destroyed. Nevertheless, Pakleppa opens his film with an optimistic
promise: "Angola longs for a new future," sings a woman in Portuguese. A politician, an ambitious rapper, and a street urchin amidst the worst possible misery all tell how beautiful and rich Angola actually is.

No More Tears Sister: An Anatomy of Hope and Betrayal Dir. Helene Klodawsky (Canada/2004/ 80 min)

A story of love, revolution and betrayal, "No More Tears Sister" explores the price of truth in times of war. Set during the violent ethnic conflict that has enveloped Sri Lanka over decades, the documentary recreates the courageous and vibrant life of renowed human rights activist Dr. Rajani Thiranagama. Mother, anatomy professor, author and symbol of hope, Rajani was assassinated at the age of thirty-five. 15 years after Rajani's death, her charismatic older sister Nirmala, a former Tamil militant and political prisoner, journeys back to Sri Lanka. She has decided to break her long silence about Rajani's passionate life and her brutal slaying. Joining her are Rajani's husband, sisters and grown daughters, as well as fellow activists forced underground. Stunningly photographed, using rare archival footage, intimate correspondence and poetic recreations, the film recounts Rajani's dramatic story and delves into rarely explored themes - revolutionary women and their dangerous pursuit of justice. Balli Qawwal Paslewale, the first generation Dalit Qawwals born out of this tradition. Join a fascinating dialogue with Lal Singh Dil - a radical poet, a Dalit, converted to Islam. Meet the last living legend of the Gadar movement, Baba Bhagat Singh Bilga, who contests the subversion of a common past, while affirming a new consciousness among Dalits, within and beyond Punjab. "Kitte Mil Ve Mahi" is people's narrative of the little-known cultural/spiritual universe of Punjab.

Rebel Music Americas Dir. Malcolm Guy & Marie Botie (Canada/ 2004/ 79 min)

>From Tierra del Fuego to the Rio Grande, the "other" Americas are in
turmoil, and in the midst of the social and political movements rocking the region are four groups of passionate musicians. Theirs is the music of the America of the South - popular, dynamic, rebellious and more often than not "anti-American". It's the rhythms and voices of Afro-Colombian musicians from communities forcibly displaced by the military; of Lila Downs and the struggle of women and indigenous peoples in Mexico; of Santa Reveulta and unemployed workers blocking access to a refinery in Buenos Aires, and Chico Cesar joining a land occupation of the Landless Worker's Movement (MST) in Brazil. This documentary short consists direct and fragmentary narratives of dead, wounded and fleeing civilians and soldiers from the first and second Russian-Chechen wars. Torn metal, the bare face of death, helplessness - nothing is side-stepped, bearing testimony to the scale and severity of this extraordinarily savage war. The material was given by the Ukranian TV reporter Taras Protsuk, killed in Iraq on 8 April 2003, and also Adam Tepsurkaev (killed in Chechnya) and Islam Saydaev. Weapons of Mass Deception Dir. Danny Schechter (USA/ 2004/ 98 min)

There were two wars going on in Iraq. One was fought with armies of soldiers, bombs and a fearsome military force. The other was fought alongside it with cameras, satellites, armies of journalists and propanganda techniques. The TV networks in America considered their non-stop coverage their finest hour, but different countries saw different wars. Why? WMD explores this story with the findings of a gutsy, media insider-turned-outsider, former network journalist, Danny Schechter, who is also one of America's most prolific media critics.

Beauty Will Save the World Dir. Pietra Brettkelly (UK & New Zealand/ 2004/ 62 min)

Before Saddam and Osama, Colonel Muammar Gadaffi was one of the most reviled leaders in the West. Then in 2002 he hosted the first Miss Net World beauty pageant, a first for Libya. "Beauty Will Save the World" follows the exploits of 19 year-old Teca Zendik, the American contender for the crown. She sets out with her political loyalties in check, even refusing to wear the competition uniform - a tshirt emblazoned with Gadaffi's likeness. How then does she assume the position of honorary consul to the US for Libya in a mere matter of months? Marvel at how diplomatic ties are re-established between two nations while enjoying the behind-the-scenes antics of a beauty pageant.

Justiça Dir. Maria Ramos (Netherlands/ 2004/ 102 min)

In Justiça, Maria Ramos puts a camera where many Brazilians have never been - a criminal courtroom in Rio de Janeiro, following the daily routine of several characters. There are those that work there every day (public attorneys, judges, and prosecutors) and those that are merely passing through (the accused). The camera is used as an instrument that sees the social theater, the structures of power - that is to say, what is, in general, invisible to us. With her options clear, and unobscured by her choice for sobriety and simplicity, Maria Ramos makes it evident that, like documentary making, justice is a long way from being impartial. How and for whom the judicial system works for in Brazil is the fundamental question dealt with in this film, without providing any definite answers or making preconceived judgements.

"Homecoming" is a story of loves lost, futures promised and the price of freedom, but above all it is about friendship. Set in 1996, it is a heart-wrenching thriller about three boyhood friends, ANC exiles, who come back home to post-apartheid South Africa. Charlie, Peter and Thabo are forced to deal with the realities of the apartheid era and their friendship begins to take on a new meaning. This feature's cast includes South Africa's most acclaimed actors.

Acting Like a Thief Dir. Kerim Friedman & Shashwati Talukdar (India & USA/ 2005/ 15 min) WORLD PREMIERE

"Acting Like a Thief" is a short film about the Budhan Theatre of Chharanagar. Starting with playwright Dakxin Bajrange discussing his arrest the film brings us inside the lives of a dedicated group of young actors and their families as they discuss what it means to be a "born criminal" and how theater changed their lives. The members of Budhan Theatre are Chhara tribals. They were notified as "born criminals" by the British, and imprisoned in a labor camp in Ahmedabad. After Indian independence they were de-notified, but the stigma of being a "born criminal" follows them to this day. (Playwright Dakxin Bajrange present for interaction)

Sisters in Law Dir. Kim Longinotto & Florence Ayisi (UK/ 2005/ 106 min)

Selected for Cannes this year, "Sisters in Law" is a totally fascinating - often hilarious - look at the work of one small courthouse in South West Cameroon. The two women at the heart of the doco wouldn't be out of place in an Alexander McCall Smith bestseller. As the State Counsel and Court President, they dispense wisdom, wisecracks and justice in fair measure. The victims of crime - an abused child, a woman daring to accuse a man of rape, and another trying to end a brutal marriage in a society where divorce is taboo - are handled with fierce compassion. A musical comedy set in the fast-paced, fast-food world of competing falalfel stands in the West Bank. David, an Israeli soldier, falls in love with the beautiful Palestinian cashier, Fatima, despite the animosity between their families' dueling restaurants. Can the couple's love withstand a 2000 year old conflict and their families' desire to control the future of the chickpea in the Middle East?

The Take Dir. Avi Lewis (Canada/ 2004/ 87 min)

In the wake of Argentina's spectacular economic collapse in 2001, Latin America's most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. In suburban Buenos Aires, thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave. All they want is to re-start the silent machines. Tormented by the haunting images and unrelenting grief of the past, single mother and journalist Thandi has difficulty communicating with her estranged daughter, Mangi. Thirteen-year old Mangi is deaf and dumb due to the beating that the pregnant Thandi received at the same time that her friends, Mike and Dineo, were murdered by an Apartheid hit squad. Mike and Dineo's fate pursues her, especially when Dineo's mother appears requesting that Thandi testify before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. German Films by Turkish Immigrants

Young Turks - festival of German films

Goethe Institute Max Mueller Bhavan brings a festival of films "Young Turks" in collaboration with LACEfilms from 24th to 27th November 2005. Eight films made by Turkish third generation immigrants in Germany will be shown.

As it called 'cinema of métissage' in the German film scene, filmmakers from immigrant families created a cinematic genre 'between cultures'. Directors like Fatih Akin, Thomas Arslan or Aysun Bademsoy started out from their own experiences as immigrants of the third generation. Besides, they were able to move between various cinematic traditions in terms of form and content. Thus, they tell stories about alienation, about the yearning for freedom and for a homeland, but also about the oppression that exists even in the culture of those who are oppressed.

The strength of these filmmakers lie in the tremendous diversity of subjects and styles in their work. Apart from the biographical connection, they are united in their rejection of positive and negative stereotypes, in their avoidance of black-and-white reductionism, and last but not least in a feel for the grotesque sides of cultural clashes. With this series of films, the Goethe-Institut brings together some of the short films, documentaries and feature films that have contributed to establishing Turkish-German cinema as a strong and innovative force in Germany.

Synopsis:
Naranappa lives in an ‘agrahara’ (close-knit community of the Madhva Brahmins). He is a rebel unlike his fellow community dwellers. He eats meat, drinks and has a lower caste keep, Chandri. Naranappa's behaviour causes strong offense and hatred in the community. Naranappa dies of the plague. No one in the community comes forward to cremate him. They can’t leave the dead-body like that as well. The most respected scholar Praneshacharya is approached by Chandri. Even he can’t find answers to this dilemma. Accidentally Praneschacharya seduces Chandri and his subsequent guilt makes him to assume the responsibility when the entire village becomes plague infested. He eventually returns to cremate Naranappa himself.

Based on Jnanapeeth award winning Kannada writer U R Ananthamurthy's novel, Samskara made new-wave Indian cinema gain a foothold in south India.

Hi Everyone,

I will be directing and coordinating for Culture Café and Kimaaya for the Bangalore Habba.

There are two areas that I am working on:

1) Rock Music and poetry - For this I will need musicians, singers, and voices. If you are any of the three - especially a musician or singer who can accompany himself/herself on the guitar and is familiar with classic rock from the 60's and 70's - Dylan, Procol Harum, Leonard Cohen, Jefferson Airplane, Zappa, Jethro Tull, etc. etc. - CALL ME immediately.

2) Readings - of revue sketches, short plays and skits, poetry, quotations and general madness - I need voices, preferably experienced.

If you don't have experience and don't mind sitting in on rehearsals and pitching in in all sorts of other ways, please do get involved. There might not be Page 3 opportunities right now, but that's the way most of the rest of us greying old fogeys began. If you're lucky and have stage presence that cannot be ignored, rest assured that we will throw you to the wolves!

If you don't believe you fit the roles above, but have friends who might, please call them and get them to call or mail me.

We will meet on Saturday, the 12th of November at 11am to discuss/ audition/ plan the series of café performances.

We will meet at Unisun Publications, above Windsor Pub, next to Kodava Samaj in Vasanth Nagar. The building is on your left if you are coming from the Mount Carmel side, and on your right if you come from Millers Road/Alliance Francaise. Go up the stairs PAST Windsor Pub (please don't stop off for a beer before, there will be time after!). On the first floor, to the left, is Unisun. Parking is adjacent to the pavement, or on the side streets.

Actors/Voices: Bring something you like or think you are good at doing. I will also bring audition pieces.

Musicians/Singers: Bring yourselves (without sore throats or fingers), other musicians, and songs you love to sing or play - strictly from the 60's or 70's bands (no Backstreet Boys, please!!!) I'm looking for voices to fill the shoes (I know, I know - I couldn't resist it) of people like Grace Slick, Nick Cave, Janis Joplin, Tom Jones, Van Morrison, and the like. Bring audition pieces of songs loaded with meaning - stuff with a message, whether it's Nowegian Wood or White Rabbit, Back Door Man or Northern Sky, Blowin' in the Wind or Everybody Knows. And if you've never heard of these songs or singers, do not worry - you shall be educated! If you have never heard of rock or blues, but can sing or play the guitar, just come anyway...

Next week, rehearsals shall be post 7pm on weekdays.

Reading Festival at Alliance!

Lire en fête is a 3-day annual festival celebrated mainly in France (since 1988) and now all over the world. This event is an effort towards « Celebrating reading » The actors of the "chain of the book" - authors, translators, editors, booksellers, teachers etc. – are mobilized during these 3 days to organize events and to sensitize the public to reading through various activities

It celebrates the spirit of reading and invites everyone (bibliophiles, especially!) to come and share his or her experience of a book, of reading, of writing and of any other literary creation.

We invite you to participate in this important event of Culture with us on 10, 11 and 12 November at the Alliance Française de Bangalore.

How can I participate in Lire en Fête?

The festival is not restricted to just Francophones or students of French language. The festival transcends all linguistic and geographical barriers. Anyone with a passion for books or reading is welcome to be a part of any activity during the fête. And when it comes to reading, it could be as simple as reading an excerpt from your favourite book or a poem or why, even a quotation! And don’t forget, it could be in any language! Share a thought by just reading it out! All the events are open to all. There’s something for everybody

What’s happening this year?

The Lire en fête, spread over three days - 10, 11 and 12 November 2005 – at the Alliance Française de Bangalore, has as events:

Photo exhibition: Discover contemporary French writers - the literati of France today. Put up in the gallery area of the institute, the exhibition is open throughout the three days of the festival. There will be a guided tour* of the exhibition on 10 November at 9:00 A.M. and at 5 P.M by the director of the AFB, Mr. Eric Rousseau.

* If you wish a guided tour for a group, please confirm your participation before 9 November 2005.

Reading: Join us for an open-house reading of texts, poems etc. in the atrium on 10 and 11 November 2005, beginning at 8:30 am, 11am, 5pm and 7pm. Each reading session is expected to last about 30-45 minutes.

And for some actual reading in French, travel around the world as Jules Verne takes you on a fabulous voyage to the center of the earth or plunge into a world of action and adventure as you read the adventures of Lancelot, or (re) discover classics of French literature like Andre Gide’s ‘La symphonie pastorale’ or Mérimée’s ‘Carmen’ and for all lovers of theatre, Molière’s ‘Le misanthrope’ or Racine’s ‘Bérénice’ or Corneille’s ‘Le cid’ or just revel in the simple fables of La Fontaine or allow your sensations to be tickled and refreshed as you read Philippe Dellerm’s ‘La Première Gorgée de la bière’ (burp!) or test your knowledge of French by participating in ‘The Little Prince’ contest’ on the audio-stations that are going to be specially set up for the occasion.

And relish Hugo (or any writer of your choice) over coffee and croissants as a special reading area will be set up near the Café Paradis of the AFB.

And don’t miss an enriching evening of reading (Bring your own texts as well, since we shall share our thoughts...) with the celebrated writer Anita Nair on 11 November at 7:45 PM. (auditorium)

Film Festival: “Book-what they make a movie out for television” said Leonard Louis Levinson. Don’t despair if you have been unable to read some of the greatest classics of French literature ever as they will all come alive when we screen:

CARMEN (Duration: 2H29min): Based on the acclaimed novel of Prosper MÉRIMÉE (one of the spearheads of the Romantic Movement in French literature), Carmen is a French opera by Georges BIZET. It was first performed at the Opéra Comique of Paris on March 3, 1875. During its time, the opera was considered a failure, denounced as “immoral” and “superficial”, but now is an important part of the standard operatic repertoire that simply cannot be dismissed.

The Spanish gypsy, Carmen lives only for sensuality. Love drives her from passion to passion. After she has loved many, she is attracted by the sergeant Don José, encompasses him with her wiles, and leads him to mutiny and desertion, so that finally nothing remains for him but to join a band of smugglers of which Carmen is a member. His fate is endurable as long as he retains the love of Carmen, but when she turns from him he is sunk in a pit of grief.

TIME REGAINED (Duration: 158 min.):
An adaptation by renowned director Raoul RUIZ,– the film is based on the novel Temps Retrouvé (from the last of the series, A la recherche du temps perdu) by one of the greatest literary giants ever – Marcel PROUST.

Year 1922, Marcel Proust on his deathbed undergoes the metaphysical experience of reliving his life as characters from his book rekindle lost memories and juxtapose with real life characters and together, they slowly spill over into the real world. From the cocooned world in his little appartment on Rue Hamelin, he is led down memory lane, as joyous days of his growing years alternate sublimely with tender memories of his literary and social life. The entire drama of war is magnified through the Parisian society around him and in this ever increasing labyrinth of images, the viewer gets a peek of the great ‘human comedy’ and the society that was to form after the war.

MADAME BOVARY (Duration: 136 min.): This is a stunning film of Gustave FLAUBERT’S classic novel Madame Bovary by the French director Claude CHABROL. This book that raised a scandal (after publishing a few controversial excerpts in a periodical, Flaubert had to go on trial to be allowed to publish the rest of the novel!) was first published in 1857 and is now regarded as one of the first modern Realistic novels.

The story is about a provincial doctor’s wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and who lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of modern life. Her repressed existence in 19th century bourgeois France forces her to seek out romance and danger. This classic film of love and deceit is a must-watch for anyone seeking to better understand the intrigue of human relationships.

South Australian Film Festival

The Government of South Australia is organising a
South Australian Film Festival – "Against the Odds /
The triumph of the Human spirit" in Bangalore between
19 to 21 October 2005.

The films will be screened in association with

Angela Boeti:Having studied dance, sports and motion paedagogy in Berlin, First StateExam, German studies and art paedagogy, FU Berlin, and completed further studies as dance-theatre trainer in Essen Angela is currently working asa performer, film-maker and dance educationist for universities,institutions, media centres and other organisations. Angela hasorganised various dance and theatre workshops throughout Europe, India, Thailand, Egypt, Western Africa and Senegal and also heads thedepartment for education in dance paedagogy of the Regional MusicAcademy of Berlin. She is also a lecturer in further education:emphasis: creative methods of dance paedagogy in the field of school and socio-cultural education, therapy as well as entrepreneurial culture.
Ms. Boeti first came to India in 1998 under the auspices of Max MuellerBhavan to conduct a dance therapy workshop in Bangalore. Her current visit is the result of contacts made at that time.

CED: Needs volunteeers for poster-making

Centre for Education & Documentation is making a film on the issue of CRZ-Coastal Regulation Zone and fishermen's right to the coast. The argument of the film is that the Govt. is the biggest violator of the CRZ law. Post-tsunami, it is trying to relocate fisherfolk villages on the coast to areas beyond 500metres. It is now using the CRZ law for the purpose, but CRZ law originally recognises fisherfolk's right to live on the coast. Also we'll have a 24 page booklet on the same issue. Our aim is to use these media to bring into light govt's violations and also to spread awareness among the fisherfolk.

We need Volunteers for poster-making, sketches, graffiti on issues like

-SEEE-AAA-RRRR-ZEED- what is it?
-MS Swaminathan report (which has ignored these rights of the fishermen) -Violations of the CRZ law all along the coastline -tourism -Prawn farms
-CRZ zones
-fragile coastal ecology in danger due to govt. policies
-sand mining/ Govt undertakings like kalpakkam on the coast (hazard to marine life)
..these are just for example. We could discuss the project in detail and decide what all posters we could make.

The idea is to make use of these posters in the film as well as in the booklet to make complex issue like the CRZ easy to understand. It is important to note that the film will have fisherfolk as its primary target group. The fisherfolk who need to live on the coast.
If you would like to volunteer for this project please do contact us.
This is a part of a larger and longer project where we will be taking up
different issues of importance that affect the lives and livelihood of the
marginalised in the Tsunami-hit areas.

Soulitudes: Advait Utsav & Photography Trail in the Himalayas

Soulitudes is our aim to share India's culture and diversity through workshops, retreats and special events and where travel is the medium to experience these in its fullest. The idea is to get under the skin of India and understand her various nuances, differences and binding factors. In this vein, some of the events that we have organized have included a tracing of the origin of music, Advait Utsav in 2004, a retreat in the jungle with noted film director Shyam Benegal and a music event with an upcoming singer Raghupathy Dixit.

Namaskar,
Churhat Kothi and Soulitudes present Advait Utsav with Uday Bhawalkar and Shakti Maira. The event will see music, art and wildlife integrate as the Indian classical form of music Dhrupad rendered by Uday inspires noted artist Shakti to provide a manifest form to the music. Bandhavgarh Wildlife Sanctuary will be the backdrop for this soulitude.
Just as the jungle will be the home for music and art to find their space, the Himalayas will perform its part for the photography trail to a Glacier. Our previous visual guide Anirban has hurt his foot and is unable to lead the Photography Trail to the Pindari Glacier in the Himalayas. We will now have renowned lensman of the mountains, Anup Sah leading the trek. Anup will use the Himalayas and the trail to the Glacier as the classroom to explore the visual sense latent within us.

Vismaya' presents 'A Man in Dark Times' in Bangalore

The English play authored by G.P. Deshpande, effectively portrays the conflict of thoughts and ideologies between an individual's values and principles and stringent group norms that try to smother his freedom of independent thinking. Multiple shades of an intellectual's character as seen though different glasses of the socio-cultural system become visible through various instances and circumstances as the sequence of the events unfolds.

The extent of attention and appeal that this play grabbed from the theatre community is evident from the fact that it got wide recognition in terms of its multilingual translations. It was staged by renowned individuals from the world of theatre within their own spheres of influence. Shriram Lagoo acted in the original Marathi play, whereas Om Puri and Nasiruddin Shah presented the in Hindi version of the same.

'Vismaya' members have had a long association with the theatre activities in Bangalore through closer interactions with well-known theatre groups. Vismaya represents a balanced formulation of expertise in different aspects of theatre like acting, production & direction, stagecraft, music and lights. A combination of veterans as well as young and enthusiastic individuals widens horizons for the group in terms of its sensitivity to a wide range of topics and thorough understanding of its presentation to its audiences.
In addition to providing entertainment to its audiences through various facets of the theatre, Vismaya has always believed in presenting thought provoking and socially relevant theatre work. The latest one is one more leap as a continuation of this conscious effort.

The play will be staged on Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 6.30 pm in Shivarathreeshwara Auditorium JSS Educational Institutes 8th Block Jayanagar.

They don't seem to have Indianized anything, so be prepared for some unfamiliar tastes! Nicely done up place, good service, 3 of us ordered 2 dishes (some of them are like thalis, with many accompaniments) came to Rs. 650. The Chicken Chulpan Set was very nice! They have photos of all dishes in menu, so that makes it easier to decide! A Korean friend of a friend had the food and she said it was authentic.

224km South of Bangalore. A little distance past Bandipur in the direction of Ooty, Cross the Auri Gouder Bridge and reach the Mudumalai National Park. Mudumalai has two features that its neighbour doesn’t – Moyar River, and proximity to the imposing Nilgiri mountain ranges. Parasailing, also known as parascending, is a recreational activity where a person is towed behind a vehicle (usually a boat) while attached to a parachute. The parascender has little or no control over the parachute. The activity is primarily an amusement ride, not to be confused with the sport of
paragliding. Land based parasailing has also been formed into competition sport in Northern Europe and especially in Finland. In land based parasailing the parasail is towed behind a car. The Status of Democracy in India today

On 20 August 2005 at SCM House, Bangalore

Democracy in India is alive and kicking. So goes the popular saying in media, in national and international forums. Emergency has largely been understood as a watershed in the history of democracy in India. We take pride in the fact that those black days can never be back, that those loopholes have been plugged by bringing suitable amendment to the Constitution, that emergency is the thing of the past, and that it can never return to plague the Indian Constitution.

However, every toiling citizen knows that all is not well. What has gone wrong and where? Our Constitution, of course, has lofty ideals as declared in the Directive Principles. But the operative portions as reflected in the Acts and Schedules have become a constraint for a full realization of the spirit of Constitution, which are repeatedly amended for the worst. Of late particularly after the 90s, the Constitutional spirit seems to have suffered a set back. The Right to Life, Freedom of Expression, Right against Exploitation… and many such core ideals of our independent struggle are getting subverted.

Is it truly a matter of bad governance or denial of democratic rights? Why is that laws that are more draconian than MISA have come to be passed ruthlessly used and abused? Why is it that the Indian Army has killed more number of our own countrymen than others – that too in the name of democracy and national interest? One of the greatest paradoxes of our times is that more kinds of oppressive regimes, denial of rights and access to resources, brutal suppression of people’s voices and the very mortgaging of the autonomy and freedom of a nation are carried out in the very name of Democracy.

In such a scenario how do we understand Indian democracy? In what direction is it moving? What is to be done?

"This is quaint place, actually a house converted to a food place. The ambience is homely, yet nice and gives you the feel of eating out at a restaurant. As you enter, there is a notice board on your right which has a couple of posters and articles pinned up for all to see.

There is a coffee shop and a restaurant beyond the café. There is also a lounge area where the buffet is served. You can choose to be seated anywhere.
The place serves West Indian and Caribbean cuisine!

The lunch menu comprises of West Indian food - West Indian rice, baked beans, Dal roti, boiled veggies, Non veg dishes, and other items. They serve very good dessert too. The Buffet costs around Rs.140 per head on weekdays and Rs.165 during weekends.

Alternatively, you could try the A la carte for lunch/dinner. They serve a special punch called cocoricco, which is a Caribbean drink. For dinner, choose from a wide range of steaks - non veg as well as veg. You can check with them about the days' special dish.

One thing is a must for those who have a sweet tooth- Desserts! From brownies to mousse to their specialty desserts, you can try them out. Jamaican Rum Truffle is a favourite.

Best library in town as far as I know: Eloor Lending Library, off Infantry Road.

Wide range of subjects - from children's books, Calvin, fiction, philosophy, photography, politics, science, cooking, to name a few - and also a big magazine section. Am told their Computer and Management sections are also really good. They charge 10% of cost of book as reading fee - well worth it, books are so expensive to buy these days! And you get to keep the book for 2 weeks.

How to reach there: Go down Infantry Road (it's a one-way), before you reach Safina Plaza, on your left you'll see ICICI Bank, big orange board. Turn left there. A few buildings down the road on your left is Blue Cross Chambers (parking in front). The library is on the ground floor at the back of the building - and the entrance is from the side. You'll see the board of Anand Lab, there'll be steps to the ground floor after that, the library is on your left.

Timings (as far as I remember!): 10 to 8, with lunch break between 1 and 3. They're open on Sundays too.

About Aruna Chetana:
Aruna Chetana is a school for mentally challenged children. It was started in 1987 as a project of Hindu Seva Pratishthana. It currently caters to the needs of 160 special children. The children are trained in self care, public awareness education and vocational skills and education. The complete development of the child is taken care by giving occupational therapy, physiotherapy, academics and co-curricular activities like sports, drawing, painting, dance, music, etc. Aruna Chetana is a charitable organization and donors are given tax exemption under U/S 80G.

About Tara Bhat:
Tara Bhat was born and brought up in the United States. She is doing her schooling now at Robert E Lee High School in Springfield, Virginia. She began formal training in the art of Bharatanatyam at the age of four under the tutelage of Srimati Charu Narasimhan. She gave her first performance Sarvam Vishnu Mayam in 1995. Tara has recently performed in the dance ballet Bharata Sambhavam at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

Tamas, a five-hour epic set against the background of partition of India, was the sixth directorial venture of Govind Nihalani. The film has participated in several International Film Festivals including at London and Montreal. Though shot on 35mm film, TAMAS was intended for a Television release.

The documented realism of Govind Nihalani chronicles the angst of an entire generation who lived through these terrible times & lived on to narrate their story for future generations lest they should also fall prey to the vicious concoctions of warped minds.

TEAMWORKS is proud to present this jewel of celluloid documentation in honour of Sri V K Murthy who was presented with the lifetime achievement award by IIFA at Amsterdam recently. HIMALAYAS- "THE VALLEY OF FLOWERS".
In 1982, the smallest national park in the Himalayas was created to protect the catchment area of the Pushpavati River. This stream emerges from a glacier then tumbles downward to meet the Ganges. It follows the contours of the steep valley that leads to Hemkunt Sahib, and is the constant companion of the pilgrims who trudge upward on the footpath. The stream's source is in a valley which British mountaineer Frank S. Smythe passed through in 1931 after a successful climbing expedition. He was awed by the variety of wildflowers growing there, and returned in 1937 to collect more than two hundred botanical species. His 1938 book entitled The Valley of Flowers brought this remote Himalayan meadow to the attention of the world.

Logos Theatre is presenting "Poeme" a workshop on Poetry

The workshop will concentrate on understanding/interpreting poetry,
performing poetry, and lastly, composing poetry. It'll be conducted by

Spiti confounds your understanding the space in classic Brechtian style- it is here that your will find moonscapes on earth. And ancient monsateries that hang off cliffs as old as time. The valley, stretching over 100km, is dotted with small villages and tiny hamlets, and is home to a population of less than 10,000. Those accustomed to the gnetle slopes of the mountains, filled with pines and poplars, will see a different face of the Himalayas here. This terrain, with its barren landscape and looming rock faces, is stark, naked and awe-inspiring.

TREKKING IN "LADAKH" from 21st July 2005

The vast land, dry and desiccated, swells and billows into great tiers of snow crested peaks. Arching over it is a sky, pure blue, benign, sheltering. THe Indus bisects the floor of the valley. In summer, it is a sullen grey, silt-laden, sometimes turning to violet. In autumn, it is at tis most graceful; turquoise and aquamarine waters weaving through golden banks of tall poplars and tumbling willows. Crumbling old monasteries that are perched on rocky promontories command the barren, empty vistas. Dominating Leh from its vantage on the norther crag is the Leh Palace, a diminutive Potala. In the late afternoon, the wind picks up, riffling the prayer flags, carrying snatches of the deeply-intoned homage to Manjushri.
